Russian LNG Storage Ship Heads up Norway Coast After Baltic Naval Escort
A Russian LNG storage vessel is making an unusual northbound voyage along Norway’s coast after being escorted through the Baltic by one of Russia’s most advanced frigates, highlighting the growing security risks around Moscow’s energy trade.
A Russian floating storage unit used to support the country’s LNG exports has left the Baltic Sea and is sailing north along Norway’s coast toward Murmansk, a move that could signal preparations for a major shift in Russian gas logistics as the European market closes to Russian LNG.
The 277-meter Portovyy, which has served as floating storage for Gazprom’s Portovaya LNG facility near Vysotsk on the Gulf of Finland since the plant began operations in 2022, was tracked passing Bodø on Thursday and continued north along the Norwegian coastline on Friday.
Its declared destination is Murmansk, where it is expected to arrive around Aug. 22, according to AIS tracking data. The move is significant because Portovyy has not previously left the Portovaya facility since the LNG plant began operating, according to public reporting.
Key waterways
For Norway, the voyage provides another illustration of how the country’s long coastline and maritime approaches are becoming increasingly important to the security of Russian energy exports and wider geopolitical competition in the Arctic.
Portovyy was built in 2003 by South Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (now Hanwha) and originally entered service as the LNG carrier Excel. It is 277 meters long, has a deadweight of about 77,800 metric tons and can store roughly 138,000 cubic meters of LNG.

The vessel’s northbound voyage is particularly notable because it was accompanied for part of its journey through the Baltic Sea by the Russian Navy frigate Admiral Kasatonov.
Photographs published by open-source researchers show the frigate sailing with Portovyy, while AIS tracking and other vessel data place the two ships together during the Baltic transit, including off Germany’s Fehmarn island on Aug. 17.
It is not known whether the naval escort continued after the ships left the Baltic and Portovyy began sailing up the Norwegian coastline.
The Admiral Kasatonov, commissioned in 2020, is one of Russia’s most modern surface vessel and is equipped with the Tsirkon hypersonic missile system.
The use of such a high-end naval asset alongside commercial energy infrastructure underscores the growing importance Moscow attaches to protecting maritime energy shipments, particularly those that could be vulnerable to attack or sanctions enforcement and boarding.
Russia protecting shipping
The security concerns have increased since the March attack on a Russian LNG carrier in the Mediterranean. Arctic Metagaz, carrying about 61,000 tons of LNG, was severely damaged in an explosion east of Malta on March 3 while sailing from Murmansk toward the Suez Canal.
Russia blamed Ukraine for a drone attack, although Kyiv did not claim responsibility. Subsequent reporting linked the incident to Ukrainian forces, while the damaged vessel was left drifting in the Mediterranean for weeks.
The incident demonstrated that Russian LNG shipments can be exposed far beyond the Black Sea and Baltic regions, potentially prompting Moscow to rethink how valuable LNG cargoes and specialized storage vessels are moved.
Marked loss
Portovyy’s relocation also comes as Russia faces the loss of its traditional European LNG market.
The European Union adopted legislation in January to phase out Russian gas imports, with the full ban on Russian LNG taking effect from the beginning of 2027.
Long-term contracts have allowed significant Russian LNG flows to continue during the transition. In the first half of 2026, the EU imported a record 9.97 million metric tons of LNG from Russia’s Yamal project, with more than 97% of those deliveries going to EU ports.
Preparing for sanctions
Moving Portovyy to Murmansk would give Russia additional floating storage capacity at a strategically important Arctic gateway and could make it easier to consolidate, store or transfer LNG cargoes destined for non-European markets.
The move could also be connected to the growing use of the Northern Sea Route for Russian LNG exports to Asia. Usually LNG leaving Portovaya travels south through the Mediterranean and Suez Canal. Placing a storage facility near Murmansk would allow increasing levels of cargoes to head east through the Arctic.
For Norway, meanwhile, the episode highlights how its maritime domain is increasingly becoming a transit corridor for Russian energy assets moving between the Baltic, the Arctic, and global markets.
