LKAB Buys Up 20 Plots in Neighbouring Municipality
The Swedish state-owned mining company LKAB has been granted permission to purchase 20 plots from Gällivare municipality in northern Sweden in connection with the expansion of the ore mine.
It is now clear that four plots in the new construction area at Nuolajärvi and 16 plots in Repisvaara in Gallivare municipality can be used to offer new homes to landowners who have to move from the mining area Østre Malmberget due to expanded mining operations. This comes after LKAB has been granted permission to purchase 20 plots in Gällivare, which is the neighbouring municipality to Kiruna.
"This is an important step and a result of good dialogue with the municipality. Now it is important that the work continues, because we still lack plots", says Isabelle Öderyd, head of transactions, LKAB urban transformation, according to a press release.
To achieve this, Gällivare municipality has leased plots from the municipal plot queue, which is a queue system for residents who wish to buy a single-family house plot. This is to quickly accommodate the municipality's residents who have to move from Østre Malmberget.
Currently, there is a dialogue between the parties to release more single-family house plots.
"Together with LKAB, we are looking at future areas. It is important to have a common vision", says Magnus Mathiasson, coordinator for land and development in Gällivare municipality.
Last year, work began to appraise the properties in Østre Malmberget, which are being taken over by LKAB.
"Property valuation within the final phase will start as soon as the bare ground period begins. When the house is valued and we have secured access to plots, we will start a dialogue about compensation. We are following the schedule we have set for purchasing houses in Østre Malmberget", says Isabelle Öderyd.
