New US Submarine Visit to Tromsø
The US nuclear-powered submarine USS Oregon docked at the Port of Grøtsund just outside Tromsø last week. “Our port visit reflects the enduring strength of the relationship between the United States and Norway,” says Captain David Beam.
The attack submarine USS Oregon (SSN 793) arrived at the port of Grøtsund on 6 October for replenishment and allow the crew to rest.
According to the US Sixth Fleet, the port visit is part of routine US submarine operations in the High North. The patrols enhance shared maritime situational awareness and are a predictable part of Nato's collective defence and efforts to maintain regional maritime stability, the fleet writes.
"Our port visit to Grøtsund reflects the enduring strength of the bilateral relationship between the United States and Norway, a vital NATO ally," says Captain David Beam, deputy commodore of Task Force 69.
"Security and stability in the High North are critical to the collective defense of Europe and North America. We are profoundly grateful to our Norwegian hosts for their continued partnership, world-class port facilities and generous hospitality as our submariners enjoy a well-deserved break,” Beam continues.
While in port, the crew will have the opportunity to explore Tromsø and experience local culture, it is stated.
Grøtsund, just north of the city of Tromsø, became a receiving port for allied nuclear-powered vessels in 2020. There have been around eight allied submarine port calls at the port each year, the majority of them American.
In September, the nuclear-powered attack submarine USS Delaware visited Grøtsund.
