The award was established in 2016 to honour a person or organization that has contributed to highlighting the importance of the High North. Frode Mellemvik, Director of the High North Center, invites the public to nominate candidates.

“We are looking for candidate that have a passion for the Arctic as well as the ability to translate that passion into action that benefits the circumpolar region. This award is a celebration of Arctic resilience and initiative.”

The winner will receive 50 000 NOK (6000 USD approx.) in support of their continued efforts.

Paavo Lipponen, Finland’s Prime minister from 1995 to 2003, received the first High North Hero award.

- This is my Nobel Prize, he told High North News in May, last year.
