Norwegian Company Assesses Subsea Tunnel to the Westman Islands in Iceland
A Norwegian consultancy will examine the cost and feasibility of a subsea road link to the Westman Islands.

The newly established Eyjagöng ehf. (Island passage) has signed an agreement with Norwegian consulting firm Norconsult to carry out a comprehensive cost and feasibility assessment for the construction of a subsea tunnel between the Icelandic mainland and the Westman Islands.
According to a statement from Eyjagöng, the project marks an important step in establishing the technical feasibility of a transport link that could provide a year-round road connection between the mainland and the Westman Islands.
According to the company the goal of the Eyjaganga project is to reduce uncertainty regarding the construction costs of tunnels between the mainland and the Heimaeyjar Islands.
International expertise
“Norconsult has extensive experience in the design and assessment of complex subsea tunnels, including in Norway and the Faroe Islands, as well as internationally", the statement says.
"Norconsult will use the latest data and international expertise to assess the feasibility of the project based on the geological data gathered by Eyjagöng this summer and the main standards governing safety requirements for tunnels, in order to estimate the construction cost", the statement further explains.
“At the same time, the company’s Icelandic consultants, engineering firms Efla and Völuberg, have supervised and monitored exploratory drilling in the area. Their experts are now compiling the geological findings and will also deliver a detailed cost and feasibility analysis for the construction of the tunnel, as previously reported,” the statement says.
End of the year
The company expects to present the results of the feasibility assessment and other analyses at the end of the year.
Exploratory drilling at Landeyjasandur is scheduled to conclude at the end of this month. A total of 225.5 meters of the planned 300 meters have so far been drilled.

"At Norconsult, we are proud to be part of this project. A tunnel to the islands would be of great interest and would reduce much of the risk currently associated with relying almost exclusively on sea transport", the company says in a statement.
Eyjagöng was founded November 22, 2025.
