New Film Series Shows How Seabirds Can Reveal Changes in Arctic Ecosystems
A new film series from the Arctic Council offers a rare insight into seabird research on Bjørnøya - and what the birds can tell us about the future of the Arctic.
Seabirds spend most of their lives at sea and sit high up in the food chain, making them extremely sensitive to changes further down the system.
By monitoring them, researchers can gain valuable insight into the changes occuring in the marine environment.
Important breeding ground
In the documentary film "Unveiling the Mysteries of Arctic Seabirds: Bjørnøya's Seabird Cliffs", the Arctic Council follows researchers from the Norwegian Polar Institute during their summer fieldwork on Bjørnøya (Bear Island), one of the world's most critical breeding grounds for seabirds.
Each year, around one million breeding pairs and an equal number non-breeding birds gather on the island. This makes Bjørnøya a globally important breeding area and a key site for Arctic seabird monitoring.
The film illustrates how seabirds can reveal broader changes in Arctic ecosystems, giving viewers a glimpse into how researchers capture and ring seabirds, use tracking equipment, collect samples, and monitor breeding colonies.
Alarming declines
Many Arctic seabird populations are declining at an alarming rate due to climate change, shifting food webs, new diseases, pollution, and pressure from various industries.
Since seabirds transport nutrients from sea to land, these declines can have consequences extending far beyond the bird populations themselves. Furthermore, as they migrate across vast distances, their decline carries a global impact.
At the same time, researchers highlights signs of hope. The film demonstrates how international cooperation and long-term monitoring provide a better foundation for understanding and managing the changes currently transforming the Arctic.
