The majority of the Business and Raw Material Committee of the Greenlandic parliament Inatsisartut wants a referendum on the exploitation of Uranium, according to KNR.
The committee majority consists of the government’s support party Atassut and the Siumut opposition party.
Although a majority of the committee wants such a referendum, it is doubtful that one will take place.
The reason for this lies in the fact that the self-rule government Naalakkersuisut holds a majority of the votes in the Inatsisartut and can thus vote the proposal down, regardless of the opposition’s opinion. The Naalakkersuisut’s major election campaign promise earlier this year was to introduce a ban on uranium exploitation.
