In Greenland, too many children are subject to sexual offences, violence and other forms of neglect when parents get drunk. Therefore, Naalakkersuisut along with the country’s municipalities now establish a trial period during which each municipality will offer shelters for children and youth at nights and weekends on and around payday, according to KNR.
The trial period will last through 2023.
The Naalakkersuisoq (minister) of Social Issues Martha Abelsen says to KNR that children have expressed a strong desire for having a shelter available and adults with whom they can talk there.
The creation of such shelters, one in each municipality, was one of the 16 items on the recommendations list presented to Martha Abelsen and Danish Minister of Social Affairs Astrid Krag last August in relation to increased cooperation between Denmark and Greenland about children at risk.
