Russia Claims Larger Seabed Areas in the Arctic

Last week, Russia submitted a claim to the UN Commisson on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS) claiming ownership of an area covering 705,000 square kilometers of the Arctic seabed, according to KNR.

Canada submitted a similar claim in 2019, and Denmark has provided further information regarding Greenland to the CLCS in 2014.

All three countries have overlapping claims. Russia has the largest claim, by far. The areas apply to the seabed and what lies beneath. It does not cover areas or waters above the seabed, such as fishing rights.
