Peat fires from last summer continue to burn in Yakutia in northeastern Russia at air temperatures reaching -50 degrees Celsius, the Siberian Times reports.
Last summer, Yakutia was hit by some of the worst wildfires in history, following extremely hot and dry weather. And now, in January, some fires are still recorded to be burning.
Scientist Nikita Zimov says to the paper that wildfires haven’t reached this far north in more than 40 years. This winter is the coldest in Yakutia since 2006, with air temperatures recorded going down as low as -59C.
