Norwegian Government Protects Harstad Mechanical Workshop

The government has announced that Harstad Mechanical Workshop (HAMEK) has been awarded the contract for the mid-life update of the coast guard ship Harstad.

"We are awarding HAMEK this contract for reasons of preparedness. The government is aware of the challenges faced by HAMEK after Norway introduced sanctions against Russia. We want to ensure that Northern Norway has both a sufficiently large dry dock and security-cleared personnel to receive larger military vessels," says MoD Bjørn Arild Gram (Center) in a press release.

KV Harstad is a Norwegian coastguard ship named after the town of Harstad in Northern Norway. The ship was built for coastguard and emergency duties, including fisheries control, the possibility of heavy towing, and oil spill protection. In addition, the ship is designed to take on board a submarine rescue system.
