Norway Stops Plans for Seabed Mining

On Sunday, an agreement was reached on Norway's national budget for 2025. The Socialist Left Party gained a breakthrough in its efforts to stop plans for seabed mining.

In January this year, the Norwegian government decided to open up for seabed mining as one of the first countries in the world.

This concerns an area of over 280,000 square kilometers between Svalbard, Iceland, and Jan Mayen.

Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre emphasizes that this is a postponement, not the end of seabed mining.

Announcements for seabed mining are paused for 9 months.
