Nominations open for first-ever Inuit First Peoples Medal in Québec

The lieutenant-governor of Québec is calling for nominations for the new Inuit category of the province’s First Peoples Medal, according to Nunatsiaq News. The distinction recognizes the contribution of Québec Inuit in their communities across Canada or abroad.

“This is a new mark of recognition and, we hope, the beginning of a tradition,” Joseph Michel Doyon, the lieutenant-governor of Québec, said in a press release. “This award recognizes social involvement, commitment, support and assistance to others, a true mission that people who are dedicated to the well-being of their community give themselves.”

The inaugural recipient will be recognized for addressing social, cultural, and economic challenges Inuit face.

The medal is engraved with a design by Inuit artist Daniel Inukpuk.
