The Nature Institute has not found mackerel in Greenlandic waters this year, according to Sermitsiaq. The mackerel has stayed further east and most of it has migrated into the Norwegian Sea, the Nature Institute says.
This is in stark contrast to the years 2014-2018, during which large amounts of mackerel were found near Greenland.
The Institute argues that fewer water fleas may be part of the explanation for this. Water fleas constitute an important part of the diet for the mackerel, and the amount of water fleas in Greenlandic waters has dropped in recent years.
