NIMR Recommends Increased Red King Crab Quotas

Scientists from the Norwegian Institute of Marine Research (NIMR) proposes a maximum quota for red king crab of 1,780 tons for 2021. That would be 250 tons more than in 2020.

There are two goals for the governance of the red king crab in Norway: maintaining long-term fisheries in a limited area in eastern Finnmark and limiting the spreading of this species outside this area as much as possible. Outside the quota regulated area, one is free to catch as much as one wants.

Research Manager Carsten Hvingel at the NIMR says research data indicate that the free fisheries have been substantial enough to keep the stock at a low level.
