On Thursday, Canadian PM Justin Trudeau, Premier P.J. Akeeagok, and Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. president Aluki Kotierk signed an agreement that gives the government of Nunavut control over its own resources — a process known as devolution.
That is reported by CBC.
Trudeau said this is the largest transfer of land in Canada's history — two million square kilometers of land and water.
The land and water management negotiation began in 2008, and the territory signed an agreement-in-principle on devolution in 2019. Devolution will give Nunavut the final decision-making authority and greater authority to collect royalties from development projects.
