Researchers have established that micro plastics are found in sediment samples from Kongsfjorden and Rijpfjorden as well as in a ‘corridor’ (transect) west of Bear Island, according to the Norwegian Institute for Marine Research.
- Results show that we find micro plastics more or less on every location where we have taken samples, says chemist Stepan Boitsov at the IMR.
The number of micro plastic particles found on each location varies greatly.
The samles now analysed for micro plastics were taken as a part of the Mareano seabed mapping program, under which the Institute of Marine Research, Norway’s Geological Survey (NGU) and the Norwegian Mapping Authority cooperate to map depth, biology, geology and pollution in selected ocean areas.
