Mayor Candidate in Greenland Loses Support Following Drug Case

Greenland politician Minik Høegh-Dam from the Siumut party was about to be nominated candidate for Mayor in Avannaata, however, the support for his candidacy has evaporated, according to KNR.

This is due to a criminal case against Høegh-Dam. In August 2018, police searched his flat and found more than DKK 150,000 in cash rolled up in a glasses’ holder, as well as 49 grams of hashish in his car. Høegh-Dam has later been convicted in court to suspended prison time, a fine and confiscation of the drugs.

Bernhard Olsen of the Siumut party, which has withdrawn its support for his candidacy, says lack of transparency regarding the details of the case are the reason for the lack of support.

However, Høegh-Dam managed to sign a political agreement with the Naleraq party prior to his being ousted from the candidacy, and this agreement stands, Olsen confirms. Siumut will now seek to find a new party candidate for mayoral office.
