On 29 May, 20,000 tons of diesel fuel spilled into nature and rivers in Norilsk following a collapse in a reservoir belonging to the Norilsk-Taimyr Energy Company, according to Meduza.
Local authorities responded to the situation two days later, which was also when Russia’s Emergency Situations Ministry learned about the incident. According to Governor Alexander Uss of Krasnoyarsk, experts had assured local authorities that there was no danger of pollution.
The Russian Investigative Committee announced that its central office will be investigating the causes and consequences of the fuel spill, and officials have also launched criminal proceedings in connection with the accident.
The incident has been declared a federal level emergency situation.
