Major Diesel Spill near the North Cape

Local firemen have responded to a diesel tank leak in Karmøyvær fishing village near the North Cape, Norway, according to NRK.

The leak has happened during the night at a local fishing company, and Manager Ole Iver Olsen says to NRK that it comes from an underground diesel tank. "Up to 10,000 liters of diesel may have leaked out", Olsen says. While the original leak is on land, there is a high risk of its spilling into the sea.

Local fire brigades are on site to control the situation and clarify what has happened. Local authorities’ preparedness committee, the Coastal Administration, the police and the county governor have also been notified.

The cause of the diesel spill is not yet known.
