The owners of Svea Svalbard is planning on a controlled liquidation of the company, according to Svalbardposten. The foundation for tourist business is disappearing and a new camp in Svea is planned from December 2019.
The cleanup process following decades of mining activities are already underway and with time, the mine will be shut completely down. The new camp is to be established in Svea to house the workers involved with the cleanup activities.
Svea Svalbard is owned by Hurtigruten and the local coalmining company (Store Norske). The company currently has two employees and has been a tourism operator in Svea for four years.
