Lapland to Increase Municipalities' Share of Mining Tax Revenues

Finnish Lapland MPs want to increase municipalities' share of mining tax revenues, Finnish Yle reports.

Under a new law, the municipalities where the mines are located will receive 60 percent of the mining tax, and the rest will go to the central government. Many of Lapland's MPs want the municipality to receive more of the revenue.

This is among others the opinion of Johanna Ojala-Niemelä (Social Democratic Party).

"I would have preferred that this whole pot had been allocated to the municipality. For Kittilä, for example, this means about three million euros", she says to Yle.

The Mining Tax Act has not officially come into force yet. The mineral tax will be collected from mining companies at the beginning of next year. It is expected to generate around 20 million euros per year from 2025 onwards.
