In September 2018, the Norwegian Marine Research Institute received samples of cod caught by Jan Mayen by the vessel ‘Loran’ last summer, an area in which one usually finds only small amounts of cod. Scientists at the MRI have now analysed samples from fish caught at six different positions here.

Both the analyses of otoliths as well as gentic analyses proved that this was a mix of Barents Sea cod and Icelandic cod.

In 2019, a limited catching of cod for mapping purposes will take place in the Jan Mayen zone.
