Increases supervisory activity in Svalbard

From May up to and including August, surveyors from the Norwegian Maritime Authority (NMA) will perform supervision of vessels calling at ports in Svalbard.

“Our aim is to ensure safety and security on board both Norwegian and foreign vessels when they visit our ports in Svalbard. This can be achieved by increased supervisory activity and a close collaboration with the Governor”, says Alf Tore Sørheim, Head of the Department of Operative Supervision at the NMA.

Safety, the environment, and good working and living conditions are key themes for supervisory activity. Vessels may be detained if serious deficiencies are identified.

“We would like to remind you that shipping companies are responsible of ensuring that vessels and crew comply with the applicable legislative requirements. We want to get on board and ensure that safety is given a high priority. Think safety first. That will keep both crew and passengers safe”, Sørheim adds.
