Improved Emergency Preparedness for the Norwegian Reindeer-Herding Industry

During this year’s reindeer herding negotiations, the state and the reindeer herding industry agreed on several measures that shall make both the authorities and the industry better equipped to handle future climate-made grazing crises.

Shifting weather conditions, increased temperature ranges and changes to ice and snow conditions represent increased unpredictability and higher risk for an industry based on year-round outdoor grazing.

The emergency preparedness fund for the reindeer herding industry is increased by NOK 4.5 million, local emergency preparedness committees are to be established in all reindeer herding industry areas, a scheme is put in place for local districts to acquire equipment for feeding reindeer during times of crisis, and there will be training courses in how to feed reindeer during a crisis.

These measures largely represent a follow-up on recommendations from a working group established following the 2020 winter feeding crisis.
