Iceland Upgrades Egilsstadir Airport

As of 2020, the publicly owned company Isavia will take full control of Egilsstadir airport and start developing it for international flights, according to RÚV.

The need for upgrading facilities at Iceland’s two main alternate airports for international flights, Egilsstadir and Akureyri, has been acklowledged for a long time, however, funding has been slow. Both airports have been keen to attract international flights, but have been limited in their efforts by poor airport facilities.

Most airports in Iceland are run by Isavia and also have a state funding contract. The upcoming change at Egilsstadir does not affect ownership, only the distribution of airport funding.
