Iceland Preparing for Eruption

Icelandic authorities continue to monitor signs of a potential eruption near Grindavik in southwestern Iceland, according to the Iceland Review.

Monday saw an earthquake of magnitude 3.1, but there is allegedly no reason to believe that an eruption is imminent. The authorities have declared a state of uncertainty due to possible magma accumulation, and there has been a land rise of three centimeters in the area.

On Monday, some 1,000 local residents attended a town hall meeting in Grindavik in which authorities covered evacuation procedures and encouraged residents to make their own preparations and plans should an eruption occur.

Geophysicist Magnus T. Gudmundsson says to Iceland Review that a potential eruption most likely will consist of slowly flowing lava rather than have an explosive character.
