Abnormally high sea temperatures over a period of 11-13 days led to lower oxygen levels, which in turn led to mass death for salmon in several fish farms owned by Northern Harvest on the southern coast of Newfoundland in Canada, according to iLaks.no.
The company now wants to find out if it can alter its fish cages in order to prevent this from happening again.
- We have to act as if this peak temperature is not an isolated incident. We must accept this as the new normal, so that we can be able to handle it, says spokesperson for Northern Harvest, Jason Card.
