Heat wave melts large parts of the ice in Godthåbsfjorden

A new image taken by the Copernicus Sentinel satellite on 22 July shows that large parts of the ice in the Godthåbsfjord - Nuup Kangerlua - have melted, writes dr.dk.

The fjord is the largest fjord system in West Greenland. The intense heat wave that has hit the world's largest island has led to enormous amounts of water flowing into the sea.

According to the Danish newspaper AFP, the melting means that about six billion tonnes of water flowed into the sea every day in the days between 15 and 17 July.
