Greenland’s Authorities Require Polar Seafood to Empty Sunk Trawler of Oil

Greenland’s environmental authorities confirm that they have requested Polar Seafood to empty the sunk prawn trawler Polar Assik of oil, according to KNR. The vessel caught fire in the Disko Bay on 14 March and sank four days later.

Greenland holds the responsibility for combating oil pollution within the so-called “boundary of the third nautical mile”, i.e. in the areas immediately off its coast. The self-rule authorities have received assistance from the Arctic Command in monitoring pollution and taking samples, and it has been documented that the vessel is leaking oil.

Polar Seafood refrained from commenting on the issue, however, its Chairman of the Board says the company is working on finding a solution.
