Greenland Port Maintenance Lag Increased by 23 Percent

An orientation from Greenland’s Naalakkersuisoq for Infrastructure Mariane Paviasen (IA) shows that there is a lag in maintenance and upgrading of Greenlandic ports for which costs increased by 23 percent from 2019 to 2020, according to Sermitsiaq.

This is some of the background for why the Naalakkersuisoq has initiated a proposal to introduce user payment for Greenland’s ports, something the government coalition partner party Naleraq strongly opposes. Today, the only port with user payment is in the capital, Nuuk.

If user payment is not introduced, the self-rule authorities will potentially have major challenges with costs related to the lag in maintenance and development for its ports.

According to the orientation, the biggest lag is found in the major towns.
