At the COP26 climate conference in Glasgow, Scotland this week, Greenland’s self-rule government Naalakkersuisut has announced that Greenland will join the Paris Agreement, according to KNR.
“I am proud that the Naalakkersuisut has decided that Greenland will join the Paris Agreement. I can now tell the Danish government that the work on ratifying the decision (…) will be submitted to Inatsisartut”, says Premier Múte B. Egede.
A new report finds that Greenland can join the Paris Agreement without having to commit to a certain reduction of CO2 emissions and without its having to share Denmark’s burdens stemming from the agreement, according to Sermitsiaq. The previous Naalakkersuisut, based around the Siumut party, refused the idea of Greenland joining the Paris Agreement as it considered the presumed consequences to constitute an obstacle to developing local business and, with time, the acquiring of independence for Greenland.
