Greenland Increases Halibut Quota to Twice the Sustinable Amount

Greenland’s self-rule authority, the Naalakkersuisut, has decided to raise the quota for halibut fisheries in the Disco Bay to 10,580 tons, according to Sermitsiaq. This is more than twice the maximum amount considered to be sustainable, 5,120 tons.

The decision goes directly against the Naalakkersuisut’s own declared policy.

The argument for raising the quota is that the dinghy fishermen will finish their original quota this week. With the quota raise, the halibut fisheries can continue for the rest of the year, according to Naalakkersuisut.
