In the recently adopted DKK 1.5 billion capacity package for the Arctic, approved by a majority in the Danish parliament Folketinget, there are provisions for establishing a conscript service education in Greenland in cooperation with the Naalakkersuisut [the self-rule government], KNR reports.
The conscript program will be located in Kangerlussuaq and is meant to increase Greenlandic citizens’ opportunities for participating in the defense of Greenland, according to the agreement.
DKK 50 million have been allocated for this purpose up to 2023. Greenlandic conscripts are to contribute to preparedness and emergency response in Greenland, both when it comes to search and rescue, as well as surveillance tasks.
