The two Greenlandic fishermen’s organizations SQAPK and KNAPK disagree strongly over whether or not dinghy fishing for flounder should continue in its current form, or whether tradeable quotas should be introduced, according to Sermitsiaq.
In recent years, flounder quotas for the coast-based fishing fleet in Greenland have been far higher than biological recommendations suggest. Both the number of fishing permits as well as the number of vessels measuring more than six meters have increased dramatically in recent years.
Greenland is in the proces of developing and adopting a new Fisheries Act, which is a.o. to decide whether fisheries should continue in their current form, or whether dinghy owners should be allocated tradeable individual quotas.
