On 28 October, flounder fisheries in Uummanaq and the Disko Bay in Greenland were halted following a decision from the Ministry of Fisheries, Trapping and Farming.
The stop was introduced at midnight that day, a move that is heavily criticized by the fishermen’s organization KNAPK, according to Sermitsiaq.
KNAPK har previously agreed with the Ministry that the shutting of fisheries shall take place with a three-days’ notice; however, that procedure was not followed in this case. That has caused a series of problems for fishermen who were out at sea on the day fisheries were halted.
When the flounder fisheries were halted on 28 October, the entire 2020 quota and then some had already been caught.
