Fish Farming Permitted in Vega World Heritage Area

The Norwegian Ministry of Climate and Environment revokes the decision from the Directorate of Environment to withdraw an emission licence for a planned fish farm within the Vega Islands World Heritage area, according to iLaks.

Thus, Mowi fish farming company may deploy fish at its facility there.

The fish farming license has been contested and after the Nordland County Governor in 2016 gave his permission, the Directorate of Environment withdrew this permit three years later citing «significant considerations for the public in general». Now, however, this withdrawal has been revoked by the Ministry.

The Vega Islands were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2004.
