Egede Remains in Nuuk, Greenland

The city council in Nuuk, Greenland has decided that the statue of Hans Egede, a Danish-Norwegian missionary often referred to as Greenland’s apostle, will remain where it is, according to KNR.

In July, paint was poured on the statue and the word ‘decolonize’ was written on it. That has sparked intense debate and a month-long referendum was initiated. Results show that 62 percent voted in favor of keeping the statue, whereas 38 percent voted against.

The statue was erected in 1922 following a private fundraising campaign. It is currently the responsibility of Nuuk local council.
