Danish Vote about Defense Reservation Today, No Direct Consequences for Greenland

Today, Denmark votes on whether or not to uphold its defense cooperation reservations within the EU. The outcome will not have major implications for Greenland, Sermitsiaq reports.

“This surprises me; there is so much debate about both the USA and the Thule radar, however, there is hardly any talk about the EU here in Greenland”, says Lecturer Rasmus Leander Nielsen at the Institute of Social Sciences, Economy and Journalism at Greenland’s university to the paper.

He further says that if Denmark were to abolish its defense reservation, which reserves the country against EU’s defense cooperation, Danish soldiers – and also Greenlandic soldiers – may participate in both NATO operations as well as on peacekeeping missions for the EU.

Even though Greenland has a high degree of internal self-rule, the country is formally part of the Realm of the Danish Crown. Foreign, security and defense politics are a joint concern within the Realm and is maintained by the national authorities.
