- There is still a need for American presence in Greenland, says Danish Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen to KNR, following the Danish government’s announcement last week that the Danish defense still wants to use the Kangerlussuaq airport.
- We may very well have to maintain Kangerlussuaq also in relation to Danish military capacity, he says.
With the establishing of a new airport structure on Greenland, with new runways in Nuuk and Ilulissat, these two are expected to take over some of Kangerlussuaq’s role in civilian aviation and may thus represent a threat to the small town’s raison d’etre.
A working group has been established and is to assess the Danish defense’s opportunities and consequences in remaining at Kangerlussuaq. Both the self-rule authorities (Naalakkersuisut) and the Danish Ministry of Defense is involved with the working group.
