Corruption Scandal Shakes Iceland

The CEO of one of Iceland’s largest fish companies and two members of the Namibian government have had to withdraw following the revelation of a major corruption scandal, according to Sermitsiaq.

Documents from WikiLeaks show that the Icelandic fish company Samherji since 2012 has paid 1.4 billion Icelandic krones to Namibia’s Minister of Justice, Minister of Fish and the latter’s son-in-law. In this way, the company was able to secure a third of the country’s quota of Atlantic horse mackerel. The company has also secured major quotas in neighboring Angola.

Both the two Namibian ministers have had to withdraw as a consequence of the revelations, and Samherji’s CEO Torstein Már Baldvinsson has temporarily withdrawn.
