Some 100,000 tourists visit the Faroe Islands every year, and they leave their mark. In the end of April, the Faroe Islands will therefore close for tourists for two days to conduct necessary maintenance, according to Sermitsiaq.
Tourists volunteering to help with this maintenance will get free accommodation and food during the weekend. On 26 and 27 April, existing footpaths are to be restored as well as new ones created, and signs will be put up to prevent tourists from walking around everywhere.
The tourist industry in the Faroe Islands currently sees an annual turnover of DKK 600 million. The local tourist organization argues that that this figure should be DKK 1.5 billion in six years.
