Denmark has asked for a role in the environmental assessment of the next phase of development at the Mary River mine on north Baffin Island, Nunavut, according to Nunatsiaq News. Denmark is worried about the planned mine expansion’s environmental impact on Greenland.

Baffinland Iron Mines Corp. wants to double production of iron ore and increase shipping across Baffin Bay.

The concerns were voiced in a memo from Greenland’s Directorate for Environment and Nature, which was included in a Feb. 11 letter from Denmark to Canadian federal officials.
