Canada Gets Its First Arctic University

Canada is the only Arctic state that does not currently have a university in its Arctic region. Now, however, that is set to change, according to KNR. Last week, the legislative assembly in Yukon Territories adopted a law that will transform Yukon College into a university.

The scientific research will take place in a newly built science center funded by the Canadian federal government with CAD 25 million.

The university is to reflect the indigenous population in the area and to focus on the Arctic areas. There will also be a requirement for the students to acquire basic knowledge of first peoples in the Arctic.

The official inauguration of the new university will take place in Yukon’s capital Whitehorse in May 2020.
