Arctic Report Card: Extreme Heat and Loss of Sea Ice

On Tuesday, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) presented its annual Arctic Report Card.

According to the NOAA, the Arctic is increasingly warmer, less frozen, and wetter, with regional extremes in weather, climate patterns, and ecosystem responses. The summer of 2023 was the warmest in the Arctic since 1900. The annual precipitation was the 6th highest since 1950, and the sea ice extent was the 6th lowest since 1979.

The NOAA also works with a network of coastal Indigenous observers to document long-term and holistic observations in Northern Alaska. Indigenous observers have noted sea ice loss, warmer air and ocean temperatures, changing wind patterns, and increased intensity and frequency of coastal storms.
