Norway to Take Greater Responsibility for Anti-Submarine Warfare in the North
Norway is taking on a greater role in NATO's surveillance and anti-submarine warfare in the High North.
This was confirmed by Norwegian Defense Minister Tore O. Sandvik in an interview with Forsvarets Forum.
"Norway is the nation that does the most in the Arctic, and we will do more," said the defense minister during the München Security Conference last week.
The change is part of a new cooperation between Norway, the UK, and Germany.
"We believe anti-submarine warfare is one of the areas in which we can relieve the Americans to a greater degree. So we will do more in line with what is outlined in the defense plan, with a new fleet plan and such," he elaborated.
He explained that the US has taken on a greater responsibility than Europe in some areas.
"In regard to anti-submarine warfare, we can do more together in Europe."
He also underlined that France is part of the cooperation and that more countries will join.
"Just how this will be done is too early to say. But it is one of the things we will do, considering our heavy investment in new, heavy capacities," says the defense minister.
