Russian Ambassador to Denmark Vladimir V. Barbin argues that the USA threatens peace in the Arctic through its direct linking of financial aid to Greenland with stark criticism of Russia, according to Sermitsiaq.

Barbin refers to Sand’s on Thursday linking the USD 12 million aid package to Greenland directly to a desire to shield Greenland from “malicious influence and extortion” from Russia and China. He argues that the US’ behavior violates the contents and spirit of the Ilulissat Declaration of 2008, and argues that the USA is now heading for a confrontational policy in the Arctic.

Sands rejects the accusations and says the USA is working for a stable, secure and conflict-free Arctic region.
