A research institution has received a fine of NOK 40 000 for breaching the rules of the tourism regulations on Svalbard, writes the Governor in a press release on Wednesday.

The regulations state that research and educational institutions must report to the Governor about planned trips at sea and about the sailing plan.

Without having given the obligatory notification, the institution carried out a research cruise in Svalbard's territorial waters – along the entire west coast up to the northwest coast. The research ship visited the national parks Sør-Spitsbergen, Van Mijenfjorden, Forlandet, and Nordvest-Spitsbergen, among others.

The institution has accepted the fine.
