Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced a billion-dollar investment in military and infrastructure in the North to strengthen the country's sovereignty in the Arctic, reports the Washington Post.

"In this new era, we cannot rely on other nations for our security and prosperity," Carney said during the announcement in Yellowknife on Thursday.

The statement comes just before the Prime Minister travels to Norway to observe the NATO exercise Cold Response in Bardufoss this week.

The government is investing an additional 32 billion Canadian dollars in military bases and infrastructure in Yellowknife, Inuvik, Iqaluit, and Goose Bay.

The announcement includes 2.7 billion for new, remote operational hubs for rapid military response.

The Prime Minister also announced funds for roads and ports in the North, including the Mackenzie Valley Highway, which will connect Yellowknife and Inuvik.
