The Dark Side of Europe
Dear reader. The future of Europe is being decided in Ukraine, a State Secretary in the Estonian Foreign Ministry recently told me. He paints a clear picture of two versions of Europe. One is almost too dark to imagine. Here is the latest news from the north.

At the recent Kirkenes Conference, I met with the Secretary General of the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who paints a dystopian picture of Europe if Russia wins the war in Ukraine.
It stands between a free Ukraine integrated into Europe or a country and an army subordinated to an imperialist, warlike Russia.

Troubled world
On the American continent, the Canadian Foreign Minister is calling for NATO to develop a security and defense strategy for the Arctic. Because of Trump.
The unrest in the world is also seeping into academia. Now the Arctic, the High North and Svalbard are identified as research areas that may involve significant security considerations, according to a new draft guide to personnel security in academia.
And population trends in the North are once again causing political concern.
"One of the solutions now being launched is to let the rural communities die. Yet, the communities are solving that particular problem themselves, without political interference", says Holm.
